United Way of Greater Union County Relocating Headquarters to Downtown Rahway

The City of Rahway and United Way of Greater Union County proudly announce that the nearly century-old organization will be moving its headquarters from its current location in Elizabeth, NJ to a previously vacant building in the heart of downtown Rahway.

Under the terms of a lease agreement approved by the Rahway City Council during its June 11 meeting, the organization will occupy a 7200 square foot building located at 219 Central Avenue, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Irving, Hamilton, and West Main streets, and directly across the street from the historic Union County Performing Arts Center.

The building long served as an office of the Elizabethtown Gas and most recently saw use as the construction and leasing office for the construction of The Willows at Rahway, an affordable housing complex for artists located adjacent to the building. The building has been vacant since 2018.

Under the terms of the lease, the organization will lease the building from the City of Rahway for 20 years, with the option to renew the lease for three additional 10-year terms. Extensive interior and mechanical updates will result in modern, efficient office space for United Way staff and programs. Conference and training room space available to community organizations is also envisioned as part of the facility. The organization expects to complete renovations and occupy the building by March 2023.

Rahway Mayor Raymond Giacobbe spoke proudly of the agreement and upcoming move. “It is truly a feather in downtown Rahway’s cap to attract a premier non-profit brand as the United Way to downtown Rahway. We also look forward to the strong potential for synergies between the United Way and the many other nonprofit organizations in our community, as well as with the recently announced Union County Social Services Community Service Center that will be constructed on Irving Street. Together, these moves not only increase the availability of services for our residents, but also will further increase the vibrance and vitality of the northern end of our downtown.”

United Way of Greater Union County’s President and CEO James W. Horne, Jr. stated “We are honored and excited to be welcomed into the city of Rahway. This is a start of a new chapter for United Way of Greater Union County, our new home will provide stability and greater accessibility to services and programs for all Union County residents.”
